AOTY #19: Zun Zun Egui – Katang
Label: Bella Union
Released: October 3
I was especially giddy to witness the success of two amazing British debut albums this year: Summer Camp’s ‘Welcome To Condale’, which I’ll get to later (spoiler!) and this phenomenal record by Zun Zun Egui. I first came across ZZE whilst at university in Bristol and loved them instantly, snarfed up all the singles they put out, so it was beyond exciting when Bella Union’s Simon Raymonde clutched them to his Bella bosom to release a full-length. Calling it a “British debut” is a bit of a disservice – ‘Katang’ takes its creators Mauritian, Japanese, and exotic Bristolian brews and fashions its own peculiar culture of vibrance and virility, flamboyant movement and silliness (just watch the above video for proof).

Love ZZE! Criminally underrated. Bella Union need to pull their plugging finger out and do some.
